Carnival bosses have this week been considering proposals to change the day on which Burnham-On-Sea’s annual winter carnival is held.
Each November’s Burnham and Highbridge carnival is always held on a Monday, the night after Burnham’s seafront fireworks, but under plans considered this week, it could be moved to a Friday or Sunday night instead.
The intention is to reduce the distance that the dozens of carnival floats have to travel across Somerset.
Under the proposals, Bridgwater’s Carnival would change from a Friday night to a Saturday, while Weston would move from a Monday to the previous Friday.
Delegates from each town carnival, including Burnham, met on Monday evening (March 30th) when the plans were discussed.
However, a vote was held and it was decided to keep the events as they currently are, but leave it open for the matter to be re-considered at a later date.
Phil New, Burnham and Highbridge Carnival’s Event Co-Ordinator, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A meeting was held on Monday when the possiblilty of changing the carnival dates was considered.”
“A lot of ideas were put forward, but a vote was held and the result was that the carnivals will all stay on the same nights and order as they are now, at least for the time being.”
Burnham-On-Sea.com understood that several carnival clubs would be happier only having to travel to the north of Somerset, for the Burnham and Weston carnivals, once during the winter circuit.
They currently have to start in Bridgwater, then travel to North Pertherton and Burnham, before driving across the county to Shepton, Wells and Glastonbury, before heading back to North Somerset for the Weston Carnival.
