A total of £9,400 was collected from spectators at Monday night’s Burnham-On-Sea Carnival – down almost £2,000 on last year.
Andrew Bryant from Burnham Lions Club, who was among the collectors at the event, believes the smaller crowd numbers were partly responsible for the lower amount collected. £11,298.86 was raised last year.
“The collection is significantly down on last year which is disappointing,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“We think it’s due to a combination of factors – the decrease in the overall number of spectators, the wet weather earlier in the day putting some people off coming and the difficult economic recession.”
“It’s also possible that this year’s changes to the Somerset carnival schedule haven’t helped. We’re now the fourth event on the circuit, rather than the third.”
He added that Burnham Lions are very grateful to everyone who donated on the night and thanked them for their support. The funds will be used to help pay insurance costs for next year’s carnival, and the rest will be split between local charities.
Meanwhile, Burnham Rotary Club has also thanked all those who gave to the Burnham fireworks collection on Sunday evening. Rotary Club organiser, Jane Gibbs, said: “The grand sum of £2,680 was collected. This will be shared as usual on a 60/40 basis between the Rotary Club charities and Burnham on Sea and Highbridge Town Council, which they use to support their local charities.”
