A record total of £12,944 was collected for good causes and charities from spectators during Monday’s Burnham-On-Sea Carnival after a bumper turnout.
The figure was up by almost £2,500 on last year, delighting organisers following a massive turnout of 30,000 people.
“It’s a fantastic figure,” Carnival Treasurer Jonathan Walter told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“While the number of coins collected was down on last year, the paper money donations were up. We collected £340 in £20 notes, which was double the amount of the previous year.”
“It’s good to see we’re bucking the trend of carnival collections and a big thank you goes to all the volunteers, marshalls, judges and collectors who helped, plus those who gave us donations for car parking.”
Carnival Chairman Phil New added: “We thank everyone who supported us this year – the amount raised is superb.”
The money collected on carnival night goes to help fund the event and also to help local charities.
