.PREVIOUS CARNIVAL COLLECTIONS:
The amount collected at the Highbridge & Burnham Carnival in recent years:
2013 – £10,765
2012 – £9,400
2011 – £11,298
2010 – £9,400
2009 – £10,332
2008 – £9,600
2007 – £11,000
A total of £10,765 was collected from spectators during Monday night’s Burnham-On-Sea Carnival – an increase of over £1,300 on last year.
Organisers have thanked spectators for the donations, which help to finance the carnival and support local charities.
“The collection is well up on last year which is really good news,” Carnival Chairman Phil New told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“We think it’s due to a combination of factors – the increase in the number of spectators, the dry weather and the higher number of collectors we had out along the route this year.”
Carnival Treasurer Jonathan Walter added: “I’m really pleased with the amount raised. Bridgwater Carnival’s collection was down 15% this year, so to get an increase here in Burnham is great. We thank everyone who gave donations and collected on the night.”
Over 40 volunteers took several hours on Tuesday morning, as pictured here, counting the tens of thousands of coins that had been thrown into collection carts and buckets.
The funds will be used to help pay the insurance and running costs of next year’s carnival, while the rest will be split between local charities.
