Local groups benefit from Burnham Carnival despite cash downturn

-

Poor weather may have caused a downturn in finances for Burnham-On-Sea’s Carnival but on Monday night (March 12th) eight local groups shared a cash windfall.

Burnham’s 2006 Carnival Queen Fiona Thornton performed her final duty of the year by handing out cheques to the groups during a ceremony at the Ritz Social Club.

Burnham-On-Sea Round Table and Burnham Lions each received £1,000. The other beneficiaries were the Burnham Excellent Entertainment Society (BEES) who received £300, the Youth Hostel Association (£350), the BAY Club (£100), Sedgemoor British Heart Foundation (£200), Stroke Club (£200), Rotary Club (£500) and St John Ambulance £500.

Carnival Chairman Mike Young said: “Unfortunately our collection was down on last year – whether this was down to the fog or gaps in the canival we don’t know – but we still thank everyone very much for supporting the event.”
