The future of Burnham-On-Sea’s carnival is under serious threat because of a lack of volunteers, says the man running the popular annual event.
Carnival Chairman Mike Young (pictured below) warned this week that if more volunteers are not found, the future of the winter carnival is in jeopardy.
At a meeting of the Burnham and Highbridge Carnival Committee on Wednesday night, he said: “The amount of helpers is becoming critical. Last autumn the work was carried out by a handful of people and we were at breaking point.”
“That can’t happen again this year. Quite simply, if we don’t have enough people to put out traffic cones, put up barriers, oversee the route, manage the parking and undertake marshalling, the 2006 carnival won’t happen.”
“We need volunteers not just on the night, but each day from the Saturday night when the floats arrive, through to the Monday night when the carnival finishes.”
“As a committee, we will have to make some tough decisions later this year and, at the moment, the future of our carnival looks doubtful.”
“There’s a question mark over the whole event. If we don’t get more help, we’ll have to make some very hard decisions. We urgently need volunteers to come forward.”
