The future of Burnham-On-Sea’s carnival looks set to be decided when organisers hold an open meeting on Wednesday (May 3rd) to discuss whether they have enough volunteers to man the popular event.
Burnham-On-Sea.com previously reported how Carnival Chairman Mike Young (pictured below) had warned that if more volunteers were not found, the future of the event would be placed in jeopardy.
“The amount of helpers is becoming critical,” he said. “Last autumn the work was carried out by a handful of people and we were at breaking point.”
Now, an open meeting is being held this week to which anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is urged to go along.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday evening (May 3rd) at the Ritz Social Club, starting at 7.30pm.
After this, the Burnham and Highbridge Carnival Committee will meet again to make the final decision on the event’s future.
“Quite simply, if we don’t have enough people to put out traffic cones, put up barriers, oversee the route, manage the parking and undertake marshalling, the 2006 carnival won’t happen,” said Mr Young.
“We need volunteers not just on the night, but each day from the Saturday night when the floats arrive, through to the Monday night when the carnival finishes.”
