A former care home in Burnham-On-Sea could soon be turned into seven new homes if plans to overhaul the site win approval.
The former Gables Care Home on the corner of Burnham’s Grove Road and Berrow Road closed because there was not enough space and flexibility for it to meet modern care standards.
Under the new proposals submitted to Sedgemoor District Council, the owner wants to create one two-bedroom house, four two-bedroom flats and two one bedroom flats. New Shore Developments also wants to demolish some of the property’s ground floor extensions to make way for the development.
The company states in its design and access statement that they will retain the building’s historical features as far as possible, stating: “The conversion of the remaining existing building will be sympathetic to retaining the original house room sizes and proportions where possible, the main access stair being an example.”
Newer extensions will have a pitched gable roof feature to match the appearance of the original building and help weathering. Bay windows and porch details will be introduced with period style windows to regenerate the period feature of the original building.
Members of the public can currently submit comments on the application to Sedgemoor District Council.
