A caravan park near Burnham-On-Sea has this week won approval to expand by local councillors.
PPM West Coast LLP applied in May 2024 for the expansion plans.
Somerset Council’s north planning committee have unanimously backed the plans at a meeting on Tuesday (April 8th), with the caveat that extensive biodiversity improvements should be delivered within the site.
A bund will be created at the site’s northern boundary to limit noise carrying from the site to neighbouring properties, which will be landscaped to deliver a ten per cent biodiversity net gain in line with government guidelines.
Morgan Jones, one of the company’s directors, addressed the council’s planning committee north when it met in Bridgwater to discuss the proposals on Tuesday.
He said: “We bought the site six years ago when it was a caravan park with a large industrial unit at the back, which was used for crushing rocks. There were lorries going in and out of the site on a daily basis, which was transporting thousands of tonnes of gravel and soil per week.”
“That has since been closed down, so we bought the land – and that’s where the extension of the caravan park is planned. It’s not overlooked in any way. We’ve gone through a lot of hoops to get here.”
Councillor Bob Filmer said: “I don’t see any problem with this application – I am happy to support it.”
The committee voted unanimously to approve the plans after less than half an hour’s debate – meaning construction work on the expansion could begin before the end of the year.
