A fresh warning has been issued about the dangers of driving in mud on beaches in the Burnham-On-Sea area after a vehicle had to be rescued on Brean beach on Sunday evening (March 9th).
Brean’s beachwarden called out BARB Search & Rescue at 4pm when the driver of a Ford Mondeo reported himself stuck 200 metres from the beach with his partner and child inside.
“Our volunteer crews were quickly on scene and BARB’s tractor was used to haul the stranded vehicle to safety,” said a BARB spokesman.
The owner, Joe Doyle from Highbridge, thanked the crews, saying: “I didn’t think I was far enough out to get stuck. We’d been driving along the beach and suddenly the wheels got stuck – it’s certainly taught us a lesson and we are very grateful to the beachwarden and BARB for their help.”
Beach warden Dave Furber added: “This is the first vehicle to get stuck here this year and we hope it serves as a warning to other motorists about the dangers of driving on soft sand and mud.”
“Our advice is to keep to the hard sand at the top of the beach in the designated parking areas. Fortunately, the tide was not coming in at the time or the vehicle could have been lost.”
