A dog walker captured on his mobile phone the moment a car burst into flames on the hard shoulder of the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea on Easter Sunday.
Two Burnham fire engines were called to the blazing vehicle, pictured above, on the southbound carriageway between junction 22 at Burnham and junction 23 at Bridgwater.
Crews used two jets to extinguish the flames at around 5pm. Two lanes of the motorway were briefly closed by the Highways Agency while crews were at the scene.
A spokesman for the fire service confirmed that the car had been severely damaged and that the cause was believed to be accidental. No-one was hurt.
The walker, who asked not to be named, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The flames quickly spread and large amounts of black smoke rose into the air until the fire crews put it out. It was quite a dramatic scene.”
