Burnham and Highbridge town council has met with county transport bosses in an attempt to improve public services in the area.
Cllr Chris Williams and Town Clerk Eileen Shaw met Jon Miller, General Manager of First Bus, and John Perrett, the County Council’s Team Leader of Public Transport, after a recent transport survey claimed Highbridge railway station was particularly poorly served by public transport services.
Cllr Williams explained that the only buses calling at Highbridge railway station are the 112 service, a summer-only Weston to Highbridge service, and the occasional 113 shuttle service to Burnham and Highbridge.
“We would like to see a 10-minute interval bus service to the station, given that some 30 trains stop at Highbridge between 7am and 6pm,” said Cllr Williams.
Mr Perrett said many bus services were subsidised by the County Council and it would be a question of financing. However, he and Mr Miller agreed to look at the services to see whether they could be improved.
Cllr Williams said: “There were also thoughts about increasing the 112 service to include a winter timetable and plans to look again at the 102 service, which serves East Huntspill and Brent Knoll in April 2008.”
“Additionally, the 670 service which serves East Huntspill does not currrently go through Highbridge due to the Walrow Bridge restrictions, but the group agreed this could be looked at again once the bridge is fully back in service.”
