Burnham’s Hillview Carnival Club presents bumper cheque to Cancer Research UK at awards night

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s Hillview Carnival Club has presented a bumper cheque for £1,497.68 to Cancer Research UK during their annual awards evening.

Members of the club gathered on Saturday 6th April at the Ritz Social Club in Burnham to celebrate their 2024 colourful cart ‘Country Kidz’, which came second place overall in the Juvenile category over the seven Somerset carnivals.

Hillview’s Chairman Duncan Britton started the evening by paying tribute to the late Terry Rickard who had provided the club with an area within Burnham Waste Ltd’s premises in which to build and store their cart.

“His recent passing has been felt greatly within the club, but his legacy lives on through his family’s continued support for the club with his granddaughter Ella performing proudly on their entry,” he said.

He went on to thank everyone who had helped the club to achieve another successful and enjoyable year. He praised the children for their outstanding enthusiasm and performance. A special mention was made to club founder Mary Nicholson for recently receiving a civic award together with celebrating her 90th birthday.

He also welcomed the representatives attending from The Lighthouse Inn, Highbridge and Burnham-On-Sea Carnival Committee, Willmott Mobility and Marina Sydenham Carnival Club for attending and for their continued support.

Hillview’s Children’s coordinator Julia Rosser thanked Duncan on behalf of the club for his hard work and dedication to Hillview as Chairman for the past year, both as an individual and for the engineering for the cart generously provided by his company DLB Fabrications Ltd.

Julia also thanked Dave Perrett for his generous donation to the club of £400 in memory of his late wife and she was then delighted to hand over a cheque for £1,497.68 to representatives from Cancer Research UK.

This was the result of the fantastic local community in Burnham and Highbridge supporting their Christmas Cart collections in December.

The 24 ‘Country Kidz’ were then all awarded trophies and certificates for their participation, followed by individual trophies for recognition in various categories.

Work is well underway building their 2025 entry with various fundraising events over the coming months planned and support encouraged.

The 2025 Burnham-On-Sea Carnival will be held on November 3rd.
