As part of the commemorations for the 150th anniversary of the death of George Reed, a plaque has been unveiled at St Andrew’s School in Burnham-On-Sea.
Former pupil George Brown MBE and present day pupil Freya Slade formally unveiled the blue plaque on Friday (June 28th), as pictured here.
George spoke about the history of the original School on the sea front and his recollections of his time there in the late 1940s.
Reverend Graham Witts of Burnham-On-Sea’s St Andrew’s Church said a prayer for George Reed’s life and his legacy to Burnham.
The plaque records ‘George Reed bought an area of sand dunes at the top of College Street and funded the building of a new National School there.
Erected in 1855 the school was later named St Andrew’s and relocated to the end of Dunston Road in 1973.’
There is a display about the life of George Reed and his association with Burnham in the Library until 4th July, after which time it will be moved into St Andrew’s Church until 15th July. Drawings made by some of the pupils of St Andrews school are included in the display.
