Motorist arrested after crash shuts Burnham-On-Sea road

-

A motorist has been charged with drink driving after a dramatic crash left a vehicle upturned and a busy road closed in Burnham-On-Sea on Monday evening (July 21st).

Police, fire crews and paramedics rushed to Burnham Road at 8pm after a Ford Escort slammed into a row of parked cars and ended up on its side, as pictured.

Eyewitnesses told Burnham-On-Sea.com at the scene that the driver had been trapped inside and removed by fire crews before being taken to Weston General Hospital in an ambulance.

Police spokesman Wayne Baker told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and will appear before Sedgemoor Magistrates on 5th August.”

“He was charged for driving with an alcohol level about the legal limit and for driving not within accordance of his licence.”

A Ford Fiesta belonging to a local resident was damaged in the accident. Local resident Ian Marsh, whose partner owns the damaged car, told Burnham-On-Sea.com what he had heard as the incident occurred.

“I was sat in the front room of my house when there was a loud bang followed by a crash outside as the car collided with the parked vehicles.”

“This is the second time our vehicles have been damaged along this stretch of road in two years. We need far better safety.”

The last serious accident occurred in July 2006 at the same spot when a rush-hour accident left four cars damaged.
