Council to consider rescheduling Burnham’s fireworks to January

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront fireworks display – which was postponed last month due to a tragic death besides the jetty – could be rescheduled for late January.

The Town Council, which organises the annual fireworks, announced the postponement of the display as a mark of respect in November.

The display had been due to be held on November 5th, just days after the tragedy when Peter Jeffery, 68, went missing in the sea on October 29th. A body was later found on Stert Island on November 12th.

Now, town councillors are set to decide when to hold the rescheduled display – with three possible dates in January 2024 being proposed.

A report to councillors states: “Having liaised with all the providers, the fireworks event could be re-arranged on one of the following dates in January, subject to tide levels and weather conditions; Friday 26th, Saturday 27th or Sunday 28th.”

A decision is due to be made at a meeting on Tuesday evening (December 12th).

The council says it incurred costs of £5,358 for the postponed event. There is currently £2,691 available in its ‘Carnival Events Week’ budget. To rearrange the fireworks event in January, the cost would be £7,113, therefore additional expenditure of around £4,420 would be required.
