Voters across Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge will be going to the polls on December 12th when a snap General Election is held.Â
In a bid to break the deadlock over Brexit, MPs last night (Tuesday) voted in favour of holding the first December General Election in 96 years.
In the Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge area, Conservative James Heappey will be attempting to retain his seat in Parliament as MP for the Wells constituency.
The Liberal Democrat candidate will be Tessa Munt, who was previously MP for the constituency between 2010-2015. The Labour candidate will be Kama McKenzie – all three pictured here. More candidates are expected to place their hat in the ring.
The announcement of the election, which is subject to approval from the House of Lords, comes after months of heated debate about Brexit.
The EU has this week agreed to a Brexit extension until January 31st 2020, giving more time for Parliament to agree the next steps on Brexit.
Government figures also reveal a surge in voter registrations nationally, with nearly two million people registering in the past eight weeks. Over half of the applications – 58% – were from voters aged 34 or under, compared to just 7% for those over 65.

The three most recent General Elections in the Wells constituency – whose area includes Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge – have seen the Conservatives win twice in 2017 and 2015 and the Lib Dems win once in 2010.
