Burnham-On-Sea Rugby Club has launched a new “run, row, walk or cycle 1,000km challenge” to encourage people to keep active and raise funds for the town’s hospital during the Coronavirus lockdown.
The club’s Tim Piper says the club has created the challenge with the aim of getting young and older people in the community involved.
He explains: “With the current times we are in we understand how much pressure and work our NHS has gone through and are still going through.”
“So with this in mind we as a group have decided we want to give back and help out by raising money for Burnham Memorial Hospital. We want to raise £1000 by doing 1,000km. To do this we need everyone’s help.”
“Normally this coming weekend we would all as a club be mucking in together for Gullivers, but obviously it’s not happening. Still, it doesn’t mean we can’t help each other out and do something as a club to help others.”
“So over the weekend of May 1st, 2nd and 3rd we want you to get out and get active – but please adhere to the social distancing rule and safety guidelines – to run, row, walk or cycle.”
“We will ask you to record your distance, screenshot it.” We will also set up a just giving page where you can donate to help raise £1000.
He adds that the rules will be that people taking part have to do a minimum of 1km (5km for all players); Only one exercise outside of your house allowed; If staying at home then you can walk around your garden; Dust off that rowing machine and row until your arms ache; If you do family walks record it per person and add total together then post.
“Please note that we understand many people will still not want to go outside which is totally fine, but we know many are keeping fit so we just ask that you record your totals for this cause.”
“We pride ourselves as a community club and want to do what we can to help at this time.”
