An illustrated talk is to be held in Burnham-On-Sea this Friday (March 8th) on the history of the town’s lifeboats.
During the event at Burnham Methodist Church in College Street, which starts at 7pm, a slide show of more than 70 images will be shown by local historian John Strickland.
Some of the images are being shown for the first time in public, says organiser Cedric May.
“We shall see the Cheltenham, John Godfrey Morris and Philip Beach Lifeboats in action plus details of the men, from Burnham and Highbridge, who formed their crews,” adds John.
“One image shows the railway lines down the Jetty including the converted railway truck that was used to transport the vessel from the Lifeboat house.”
“Several images of the converted railway coach known as ‘The Cathedral’ together with the men who used it as a rest room while waiting for a vessel to arrive are included.”
Tickets will be £5 each on the door with all monies raised on the night going to the church’s funds.
