Burnham-On-Sea Infants School starts consultation on proposals to create new SEND places

-

A consultation process has started on proposals to create a new SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Unit at Burnham-On-Sea Infants School from September 2025.

The Local Authority have approached the school proposing a remodelling of existing teaching spaces on school site to create an SEND special unit capacity.

The facility would use existing space, available due to falling rolls locally, to create a dedicated 9-place SEND unit within the heart of the school.

Headteacher Carly Hatch says: “Capital works required would be funded by High Needs Place Capital allocation, with places then funded through high needs block funding.”

“Changes would support the Local Authority to meet their statutory functions around sufficiency of places for SEND provision.”

“The unit will be designated to support children with Speech, Language and Communication needs.”

“If the proposed change of an addition of an SEND unit goes ahead, admissions for places will be commissioned by the Local Authority through the high needs place planning process. Attending the school will not give children any additional priority for a place in the SEND unit.”

The four week consultation period started on 4th April 2025 and closes at noon on 6th May 2025.
