Burnham-On-Sea Harriers running club have turned their empty running shoe boxes into Christmas gift boxes for children in developing countries.
Each shoebox has been lovingly filled with toys and games to bring joy to children who might otherwise receive nothing on Christmas day.
The boxes have been added to those given by local schools and community for ‘Operation Christmas Child’ that will be collected from St Johns Church, Highbridge, after a special blessing from fellow Harrier, Reverend Prebendary Sharon Crossman.
Sharon told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am very proud to belong to such a generous running club and I know that the shoe boxes will have a huge impact on each child who receives one.”
“It’s incredible to think how far these boxes will travel. Thank you to everyone who has contributed in our community …the congregation at St John’s Church, local schools and my fellow Harriers.”
One of the Harriers team said of the shoebox appeal: “My dad left when I was 7 years old, so we didn’t have very much and Christmas time was the only time we would have any gifts and they were always second hand, apart from the orange and apple. That’s why I love being able to give something to the children who might not have anything else at Christmas. I enjoy filling the boxes with things I would have liked.”
