Burnham greengrocer re-starts outside sales of fruit and veg after thefts

-

A Burnham-On-Sea greengrocer and deli has re-started selling fruit and veg outside its shop after finding sales were hit by halting the display following a spate of thefts.

Earlier this month, Burnham-On-Sea.com reported that Gardiner-Whites in Burnham High Street had taken the “regrettable decision” to no longer display produce outside due to “excessive levels of thefts” of produce.

But the store’s owners, Richard and Jax Gardiner-White, have this week re-introduced the displays after increasing security.

Jax, pictured, added: “We found that not having the display of fruit and veg outside the shop hit our sales. They were down by about 25% during the two weeks that we didn’t have the display.”

“So we’ve taken a look at how we can display the fruit and veg outside while making it more secure, and have taken the decision to re-introduce it.”

“The response has been positive from customers and shoppers who are keen to see it displayed again.”

The award-winning store was forced to take the displays inside earlier in September, saying: “It was ridiculous – due to excessive levels of thefts from the front we had no choice but to keep all stock inside.”

A new security initiative is underway to help shops in the town centre communicate information about thefts between each other to try and reduce crime.
