Volunteers at Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Foodbank have thanked residents for donations as they see a rise in demand from struggling local families.
The team of 25 volunteers at Burnham’s Foodbank have helped 1,828 people – including 421 children – during the past year as the pandemic has affected some families.
Now, the team are gearing up for a busy winter period and are appealing for donations of certain items as Tesco’s Christmas food donations collection gets underway from Thursday and Saturday this week between 9.30am-5.30pm.
Talking to Burnham-On-Sea.com this week, the Burnham food bank’s head of operations Maxine Bashford says: “It has been a busy year and we are very grateful for the donations, but we are keen to encourage donations of the right items.”
“We are very well stocked with food parcel core items such as pasta, beans and cereals but we regularly run short of small jars of coffee, fruit juice and squash, soap bars and liquid soaps, toiletries, toilet rolls, tinned vegetables, tinned potatoes, tinned spaghetti, tinned tomato, tinned fruit, tinned rice pudding, custard and UHT milk.”
“The Foodbank continues to be very well supported by our local community for which we are extremely grateful but we want to receive targeted donations to be most effective.”
People needing referral for emergency food support should contact their existing support agency or the Village Agents team, Citizens Advice, Schools, Doctors, Health Visitor, or Homes in Sedgemoor.
