£70,000 campaign launched for Burnham Community Centre repairs

-

A £70,000 fundraising campaign has been launched to fund ‘very costly repairs’ needed at Burnham-On-Sea’s Community Centre.

The 200-year-old building in Berrow Road is in need of work to refurbish its roof and walls, say fundraisers who are organising a series of events and seeking grants.

The building is home to over 40 groups, including Burnham U3A with 600 members, and is visited by thousands of people every year.

Talking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Christine Owen, pictured, who is Membership Secretary at the Friends of the Community Centre and Chair of its fundraising group, said: “We have a 200 year old building which is in need of very costly repairs.”

“The roof has huge problems at the moment and may need replacing as it has been patched up so many times.”

“One wall has serious cracks in and also needs investigating. It is like the Forth Road Bridge, there is always something needing to be done.”

She says the estimated costs for the roof renewal are £52,000 and the wall repairs could be as high as £20,000. The centre is planning several grant applications as well as fundraising events.

A fundraising garden party is to be held this Saturday (June 29th) at White Lodge, 36 Rectory Road from 3-5pm, raising money for the Centre. Alongside teas and scones, there will be stalls and a tombola.

Tickets for this Saturday’s garden party are priced at £5 each and are available on 784500, 783372, or at the Burnham U3 Coffee Morning.
