A Burnham-On-Sea nursing home’s plans for a two storey extension have been turned down this week due to concerns about road safety in nearby Berrow Road.
Burnham Lodge Nursing Home, pictured, had applied for Full Planning Permission to build a two-storey extension to create 13 bedrooms.
However, Sedgemoor District Council has this week rejected the scheme due to safety concerns for motorists in busy Berrow Road.
“The site has insufficient frontage to Berrow Road to enable an access to be satisfactorily laid out incorporating the necessary visibility splays which are essential in the interests of highway safety,” explained a spokesperson.
“Additionally, the proposed development would result in the increase use of the existing sub-standard access which would be prejudicial to highway safety.”
Separately, Burnham and Highbridge Town Council had given its backing to the plans last month, but also raised several concerns.
“Members thought it was a good proposal overall, but were disappointed with the lack of detail on the plans,” said a spokeswoman.
“They were concerned over the increase of traffic to a site where there appeared to be poor access and there was no mention of increased parking spaces to accommodate the increase in staff numbers or visitors.”
