A group set up to help to tackle climate change in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge has become a registered charity.
The Burnham & Highbridge Green Team CIO is celebrating its new status as a registered charity in a move to help the two towns become healthier and more sustainable places to live.
Initially established as the Town Council’s Climate and Ecology Working Group, the Green Team will continue to facilitate initiatives and collaborate with those wanting to tackle climate change locally.
New groups to have grown out of the Green Team so far include the Repair Cafes, Plastic Free Group, the Growing Group and the Bus User Group.
The Green Team also works with organisations such as the Somerset Wildlife Trust who recently helped create the Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Climate Adaptation Plan.
Through collaborative events, residents helped prioritise ways in which the two towns need to adapt to climate change and reduce the risk to our homes, green spaces and our health.
Lesley Millard, Trustee of the newly-founded Green Team, says: “As an independent charity, we’re very much driven by the improvements local people need to see not only to our local environment, but hopefully to our pockets, our health and happiness as well!”
“We’re collaborating with amazing groups like Our Highbridge on increasing the number of trees in the towns, want to set up a Library of Things so people can borrow rather than buy equipment they use a few times a year, and so much more.”
“Anyone with the same ambitions to work collectively on projects aimed at a greener, more sustainable future for those living in Burnham and Highbridge? We’d love to hear from you.”
Burnham & Highbridge Green Team has four main areas of work: Energy, Transport, Ecology and Sustainability. The Green Team and associated groups will be showcasing their projects and four year action plan at the Eat Festival in Burnham-On-Sea in May.
