Jubilee bunting has been hung along Burnham-On-Sea’s High Street this week following an agreement between Somerset County Council bosses and the town’s Chamber of Trade over where it could be installed.

Contractors hung the patriotic bunting up along the High Street on Monday, as pictured, following media coverage of ‘health and safety concerns’.

The Chamber of Trade said it had been told by the council that a number of risk assessments would have to be carried out and that the lamp posts would have to be stress-tested before the bunting could be hung up, however talks between the two parties came to a successful conclusion, enabling the work to proceed.

An agreement was reached on Friday for the Chamber of Trade to install bunting on certain parts of the lighting columns, providing height restrictions were met.

Somerset County Council spokeswoman Anna Newman told Burnham-On-Sea.com there had been no approach from the Chamber regarding the fixing of bunting, nor had there ever been a formal ban.

“We are pleased to support Burnham-On-Sea celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. An engineer has met the Chamber of Trade and agreed that bunting can be fixed to the lampposts in the High Street they have chosen. We are happy for bunting to go up across the county for any occasion, but organisers should always contact Somerset Highways first if they want to attach it to our property,” she said.

Burnham county councillor Peter Burridge-Clayton added: “I’m delighted the bunting is going up and I would like to thank all those who were involved in bringing this Jubilee project to a swift and excellent conclusion. It’s great to see the town brightened up in this way.”

A spokesman from the Chamber told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Common sense has prevailed and we’re delighted that this all has been fully resolved.”
