Sedgemoor District Council is investigating how several tonnes of builder’s waste has appeared on Berrow beach in recent days.
Several beach walkers have been shocked to find discarded bricks, breeze blocks, earth and even wooden stakes with exposed nails, as pictured here.
Sedgemoor District Council, which manages the beach at Berrow, has said this week that it will not hesitate in taking legal action against whoever is dumping the material.
“We respond as quickly as possible to any reported fly tips and we do prosecute when we have evidence of the culprits,” council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Local walker Chris Loughlin believes that a builder spread the waste last Thursday.
“Just after high tide a contractor was dumping builders rubbish and soil on the beach,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “The driver went several times up and down about 400 yards of beach dumping waste, presumably to avoid paying for proper disposal.”
He said the wooden stakes with exposed nails are a particular concern. “These will ruin a holiday for visitors if they tread on them or injure the horses that are exercised on the beach.”
Meanwhile, Sedgemoor District Council is continuing its investigation into the incident and anyone with information should contact the council direct.
