Budding young chef celebrates success at annual Rotary Young Chef Competition

A budding young chef is celebrating success in the annual Rotary Young Chef Competition.

Young chef Freya Slade, pictured, from King Alfred School Academy in Highbridge has been taking part in the latest rounds.

In January, the school round of the Rotary Young Chef contest saw three Y9 students cook off against each other.

The students were: Savannah W, Freya S and Ozzy C. Freya S came out on top in a very close competition.

The competition was judged by two-time winner Poppy Mackay and food teacher Emma Woodman.

“Both judges said they were very pleased with the standard of cooking and skills on display and Poppy handed over the trophy to Freya, who’s vegetarian dish wowed them, followed by a lime dessert,” says a spokesperson.

“This then saw Freya go on to the next round of the competition, cooking against students from around the district in Minehead.”

“Freya was very pleased to be judged the winner of the Rotary Young Chef District Final.”

“The next round saw Freya travel to Bristol’s Clifton College to compete in the Rotary Young Chef Southern Wales and Southwest Cluster Final when she again performed very well but just missed out on reaching the next round against older competitors.”

Teacher Natasha King said she was “very proud of Freya for continuing with her cooking and developing skills. I think there are big things to come from Freya for the future.”

“We welcomed Poppy back into school Wednesday 13th to mentor Freya ready for the next round, discussing the judges’ comments from the district final, having a cook of the dishes ready for Sunday.”

“Poppy is now completing her apprenticeship at The Olive Tree in Bath and it’s great to have her back at TKASA supporting and continuing to inspire the students within school.”
