Brownies from Burnham-On-Sea, Highbridge and Brent Knoll were among 160 girls who took part in a sleepover at the end of Weston Pier to mark the group’s 100th birthday this week.
Making new friends, the Brownies from Burnham, Highbridge and Brent Knoll formed half of the Mendip division’s contingent, celebrating the Big Brownie Birthday with a ‘stayaway’.
Fanning out in groups of sixes, clutching tubs of tuppeny pence pieces the girls made new friends as they decided which games to play or prizes to try and win.
High above the heads of those enjoying the amusements, brownies and leaders queued to test their mettle on the Robo arm, a tech ride that saw the participants spun from side to side and turned upside down.
Fourth Burnham Brownie, Chelsea (9) said: “It was amazing, well off the scale, the freefall ride and the funhouse were the best.”
Several hours of fun in the amusements led the girls to prepare their beds, rolling them out in the Regency suite before settling down for an evening camp fire sing a-long with Chief Guide Gill Slocombe joining them.
Clutching traveling companions, centenary teddies brought from home, the girls tucked in for lights out and excitedly talked as moonlight streaked into the top storey suite.
A cooked breakfast saw the sixes tuck in, giving them time to begin planning their next ventures in the amusements, using a special unlimited card to give access to the many rides.
“The centenary sleepover was part of one hundred ‘stayaway’ events being planned for hundreds of girls aged seven to ten in the county who enjoy being a Brownie and want opportunities to make new friends, share adventures and celebrate the movement that helps them learn new skills,” a spokeswoman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
The ‘stayaway’ event included girls from as far afield as Axbridge, Cheddar, Shipham, Weare and Wedmore, organised by County Indoor advisor Juliet Dormer with a team of leaders from across the division.
