New details emerge about Burnham-On-Sea’s super-fast Internet plans

-

More details about the super-fast broadband service being introduced in Burnham-On-Sea were revealed this week.

Somerset County Councillor David Hall, portfolio holder for economic development, said Internet speeds of around 20Mbs will be available in Burnham within four years following the government’s recent announcement that Somerset, North Somerset and Devon will share a £31m payout to bring super-fast broadband to the area.

Speaking at Burnham-On-Sea Community Centre during this week’s Chamber of Trade AGM, Cllr Hall said: “It’s exceedingly good news that this money has been secured and that towns like Burnham will benefit from the super-fast speeds.”

He told Burnham-On-Sea.com that no dates have yet been confirmed for the roll-out of the new technology into Burnham, but he said the work would be complete by May 2015.

He added that the service would not only be offered to businesses, but home users as well.

And while none of the £31m of funding will be used to subsidise users’ access costs, he said that “incentives” would be available to encourage uptake.

Highbridge County Councillor John Woodman, who was also at the meeting, added: “It’s great news for this area – I am sure that many will benefit from this in the years to come.”

Rupert Cox, CEO of Somerset Chamber of Commerce, who also attended the meeting, said the service would be of “huge benefit to businesses across the region.”
