A unique illustrated history talk focused on the brick and tile manufacturers of Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge will take place this Wednesday (February 14th).
North Sedgemoor Local History Group is holding the special event in King Alfred School’s Lecture Theatre.
Historian John Strickland from the group told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Many of the lakes around this area were formed when alluvial clay, deposited during the Roman occupation, was taken for brick and tile manufacture.”
“There were at least seven companies in Burnham and Highbridge and at one time three per cent of the local population were employed in this industry.”
He adds: “Did you or any member of your family work at APEX, Colthurst & Symons, Estlin’s, Cox’s, Britannia, or Pitt’s Brick & Tile Works? Do you remember the lane that was the main entrance to the Colthurst & Symons Works by Midway House or when the railway line ran between the original lakes that were there in those days?”
To find out more, or reminisce, visitors are invited to the next meeting of the North Sedgemoor Local History Group on Wednesday 14th February where over 90 slides will be shown including ‘Now & Then’ images of where these companies were, some of the names and photos of the people who worked there together with a range of the products made.
The talk will start at 7pm in King Alfred School Lecture Theatre. Visitors are welcome for just £2. To become a member and attend North Sedgemoor Local History Group’s future talks in the current programme you can do so for £5.
