Brent Knoll’s traditional wassailing ceremony draws big crowds

-

Large numbers of spectators flocked to watch a traditional wassailing ceremony in Brent Knoll last night (Saturday).

Bitterly cold weather failed to hit attendance levels at the event at Westcroft Cider Farm in Brent Knoll.

The crowds watched a torch-lit procession into the orchard where burnt toast was symbolically placed in the tree by the Wassailing Queen, accompanied by songs from Brent Knoll School pupils, above, and musicians.

An evening of live music and entertainment followed from Riverbrew, the Somerset Mummers and others – accompanied by plenty of cider!

The wassail is celebrated each year on ‘Old Twelvey Night’ as it would have been before the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar in 1752.
