Burnham-On-Sea’s MP officially opened a new £24,000 solar panel power project at a school in Brent Knoll on Friday (February 13th).
An array of solar photovoltaic panels has been installed on the south facing roof of Brent Knoll Primary School’s new school extension, thanks to grant funding.
MP David Heathcoat-Amory was the special guest who performed the grand opening at the school on Friday.
Head teacher Karen Davidson explained the scheme to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “These panels will provide a large proportion of the yearly electricity needs of the school. Excess energy produced, for example during school holidays, will be exported back to the grid via a ‘buy back’ scheme provided by a number of energy suppliers.
“The school expects to make a saving of about £1,000 a year as a result of having the solar panels. The project was led by Rob Vohra and the school secured full grant funding from the government-backed Low Carbon Buildings Programme and EDF Energy.”
“The total cost of the project was just over £24,000, but it didn’t cost the school a penny.”
The school held a special assembly to thank Mr Vohra for all his hard work on the project and after the assembly Mr Heathcoat-Amory commended the school for following-up the scheme and asked the children to keep a record of the data from the display panels to find out how effective they are.
He then cut a ribbon on the external display panel to mark the official commissioning of the system.
