Motorists living on the outskirts of Burnham-On-Sea face three months of disruption due to the closure of a busy country road.
Network Rail is carrying out bridge strengthening work along Ham Street and Station Road in Brent Knoll, prompting the closure which came into operation on Monday (June 9th) and will be in place until September.
Diversion signs have been introduced along the route, with traffic being directed from Berrow into Burnham.
Local councillor Bob Filmer told Burnham-On-Sea.com he has been in contact with the firm carrying out the work to try and minimise the impact on motorists.
“I spoke with the contractor and they had in fact tried to do the works earlier in the year but Wessex Water beat them to it,” he said.
“Burton Row was closed for approximately eight weeks and then Brent Street was closed for up to ten weeks. It was agreed that closing two of the three main entrances to the village was not workable, hence the timing of the bridge closure.”
“I have been assured that as long as they do not find anything unexpected the works could be done in half the time and they have also promised to maintaining pedestrian access across the bridge except when it is actually being resurfaced.”
“I have pointed out to the contractors that signs are required at the junction at East Brent B3140/A370 and also at the Berrow Triangle as many caravanners use this route as a cut through and they will have a job turning once they get to the bridge.”
