Pirate themed family cycle ride to take place today on Brean Way

-

Families are being invited to take part in a family ride along the new Weston-super-Mare to Brean cycle route today (Sunday).

A pirate themed family fun cycle ride will take place along Brean Down Way.

Funded through the Department for Transport Sustainable Travel Access Fund, set up to encourage cycling and similar activities, the ride will start from Uphill Wharf (opposite the café) between 10am and 11am, and finish at Brean village hall and beach.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, North Somerset Council’s deputy leader and executive member with responsibility for highways, said: “This promises to be a fun event, supporting our sustainable travel programme of work and offering families a chance to enjoy this newly opened cycle route.”

“There’ll be a treasure map for children to follow with stickers to collect along the route, as well as a host of free activities on offer at the beach including building a pirate galleon, crazy bikes, flag painting and tug of war.”

Mechanics from Dr Bike will be on hand at the start and at the village hall to check bikes, and families are encouraged to pack a picnic to enjoy during the day.

People can register for the event to make sure they get a space. Everyone who registers will also be entered into a prize draw with a selection of prizes up for grabs such as a Family Adventure Golf Pass.

Brean Down Way opened in July and provides cyclists and walkers with a five-mile traffic-free route from Uphill to Brean.
