Mounting concern for the welfare of a fully clothed man in the sea at Brean caused a major rescue operation for Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards, police, ambulance and lifeboat crews this afternoon (Sunday, April 10th).
A police helicopter also hovered overhead after the ‘distressed’ man was spotted by Brean’s beach warden in neck-deep water some distance from the shore.
After a brief stand-off, three police officers coaxed the middle-aged man out of the water and up the beach, as pictured, where he was treated by ambulance crews.
Burnham-On-Sea Coastguard Officer Dave Welland told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There was a lot of concern for his welfare so, as a precaution, no effort was spared in reaching him.”
“He was encouraged out of the water by the police and taken away by the ambulance crew for a check-over.”
He added that despite this weekend’s warm weather, the sea temperatures at this time of the year are bitterly cold and hypothermic-like symptoms can set in.
