Exeter duo David Kynaston and Andy Russell raced away with the top prize at the 2007 Brean Rally on Sunday (January 28th) when they held onto their overnight lead to win the overall title.

The pair – pictured right during Sunday’s award ceremony – won the 11th annual event in an Audi A3 Quattro, beating second placed Peter Lloyd and Graham Handley by 49 seconds. Third place went to the event’s 2006 winners, husband and wife team, Steve and Yvonne Furzeland.

Winning driver David Kynaston told Burnham-On-Sea.com he was “delighted”, adding: “It’s been a great team effort – I thank my co-driver Andy and all our support team.”

Out of the 86 teams competing, 58 completed all twelve stages. There were no serious mishaps or incidents, with just one car rolling over during the first day.

All three Burnham teams – which included Dave Boden and Sara Wills, George Mullins and Des Wood, and Steve Leigh and Nick Parsons (pictured here) – completed the event.

The first Burnham team home was Boden and Wills, who finished in 16th spot, followed by Mullins and Wood in 27th place, while Leigh and Parsons ended the event in 55th position. Sara Wills was also picked up the trophy for Best Lady Co-Driver.

Steve Leigh and Nick Parsons Disabled driver Barry Pavey, 47, who was fitted with artificial limbs after a serious road accident in November 2005, was given a standing ovation at the award ceremony when he was handed a special trophy for Sporting Achievement.

Despite four major operations over the last 13 months, Barry was fitted with prosthetic legs and still took part in this weekend’s event. He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’m honoured to receive this trophy, but disappointed we didn’t get beyond the first stage due to electrical problems with the car.”

Enwright and Lovegrove in their carThe event’s lead organiser, Rod McKenna, said he was very pleased with the way the two-day rally had gone.

“It’s been one of our best events – if not the very best. It continues to grow in stature every year, thanks to the great achievement by everyone. It definitely puts Brean on the rally map.”

He thanked his team of marshalls and officials, plus made special mention to the House family for hosting the event at Brean Leisure Park and the event’s sponsors, which this year included PIAA, Permashine and Howards.

All the rally’s winners surrounded the winning car, an Audi A3 Quattro, at the award ceremony. A group of pole dancers from Vamps in Weston, who are one of the event’s supporters and sponsors, are shown in the front row.
