Long-standing Chairman walks out of stormy Brean residents meeting

-

A stormy meeting of Brean and Berrow Residents’ Association came to a dramatic halt this week when six villagers walked out after the Chairman of more than 20 years was ousted from her position.

Almost 50 residents crowded into Brean Village Hall on Monday evening (October 26th) for the group’s Annual General Meeting, pictured here.

But when the group’s long-serving Chairman, Joan Jackman, narrowly lost a public vote to retain her position by 19 votes to 17, she walked out of the building, followed by a group of villagers.

Mrs Jackman told the audience: “I am leaving this meeting and do not wish to continue any further.”

The new Chairman, Robert Munn, restored calm and thanked his predecessor for her work.

“We’re a democratic group and a vote has taken place in which a fair decision was made,” he said.

“I would like to thank Joan for all she has done over the years.”

“We want to hear the feelings of the residents of Brean and Berrow and this meeting ushers in a new era for this association.”

Villagers also elected Bob Parker as the association’s secretary, and Michael Hart as treasurer. The group intends to hold open meetings each month.
