In video: Four people stranded on ride in mid-air at Brean Leisure Park

-

Fire crews from across Somerset were called to Brean Leisure Park on Friday (July 24th) to help four people who had become trapped on a huge fairground ride.

The Fire Service was called at 12.30pm to help four people stuck on ‘Xtreme’, a well-known fairground ride at the park.

Fire spokesman Paul Slavin told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The children were rescued by crews from Weston-super-Mare using a turntable ladder with assistance from crews from Burnham, Bridgwater and a Command Support Unit from Street.”

He added: “All persons were checked by the ambulance service and were found to be well.”

The parents of the stranded youngsters had demanded the ride was stopped because of unfounded safety fears. The adults had wrongly feared a safety harness was not in place on the ride. The parents became concerned when one of the children on the ride began screaming. They believed one of the safety harnesses was not in place, and persuaded the operator to stop the ride – thereby jamming it.

Sarah House, a director of the Leisure Park, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “During the usual operating of the Extreme ride an incident occurred that required the ride to be stopped at approximately 12.30pm. There were four people on the ride at the time and at no point was their safety at risk.”

She added: “The ride was manually operated to remove all riders safely. The health and safety executive have been informed and are satisfied that the ride can be re-opened.”
