Brean Land Yachting Club awaits £22k insurance claim to replace destroyed clubhouse

-

A month after 70mph winds completely destroyed their wooden clubhouse, members of Brean Land Yachting Club are still waiting to find out whether their insurance company will fund a new replacement building.

As Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in April, gale-force winds blew apart the structure of the building, which had been in place next to Brean beach since 1990.

The club’s shocked members say their repair bill could stretch into thousands of pounds, and they are still waiting for the outcome of an insurance claim.

Graham Harris, Vice Chairman, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We estimate the cost of a replacement clubhouse will be £15,000 to £17,000 and with the extras inside it will be around £22,000. We were fully covered so expect our insurance company to help us.”

“The insurance is taking longer than hoped, and we would like the clubhouse restored so normal operations can resume.”

“We have been bowled over by lovely messages of support since the incident and will definitely rebuild in the near future.”

“It is devastating for this to have happening to the building but I am confident we will rebuild and be back.”

Treasurer Pete Callaghan, who has been involved with the club for 15 years, added that he’d not experienced winds as strong as those that destroyed the building.

“The scale of the damage was surprising and hugely disappointing. It was one hell of a westerly and our wooden building unfortunately took the brunt of it.”

And Derek George, Chairman, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are all shocked this happened.”

“It’s ironic when we actually rely on the winds to do our sport, but this time the wind was very unwelcome.”

The club is taking donations towards the cost of replacing its webcams.
