Exclusive: £3million plan to create new ice rink at Brean unveiled

-

Brean Leisure Park has this week unveiled a £3million plan to turn its outdoor swimming pool complex into a new all-weather attraction boasting a new ice rink.

The current site, which was built in the late 1970s, features an indoor pool and a children’s swimming pool with several flumes, as pictured.

But Brean Leisure Park’s owner, Richard House, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that the site needs an extensive makeover and he revealed that proposals are being drawn up for a huge modernisation of the site.

“The outdoor complex will have a roof put over it and will be extended to include a 25-metre lane swimming pool and a number of interactive water play areas,” he said.

“The existing flumes will be refurbished and a new ‘lazy river’ added. The indoor pool will be converted into an ice rink to cater for about 60 skaters a session.”

“The whole project will probably take about three years to complete, although it is intended to keep parts of the complex open during the work to satisfy the needs of the park’s visitors and neighbouring parks.”

He added: “The scheme has yet to be submitted to Sedgemoor planners, but it is hoped that this will happen very shortly and a start can be made this winter.”

Mr House said he hopes the new facility will create many new jobs for the area.

He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “At present, the pool complex employs three full time staff and 14 part-time staff.”

“When the complex is fully up and running, the full timers and part-time staff are expected to double and the complex will cater up to 500 visitors at a session. There are also plans for a café and gym.”
