BREAN Golf Club’s fundraising drive for the Burnham-On-Sea hovercraft has got off to a tee-rific start by raising £2,300 from its first big event of the season.

The BARB Charity Trophy, which was made by Highbridge based Bespoke Signs, and was presented to the winning teamMore than 80 golfers putted, chipped and drove their way around the fairways to raise money for BARB, the group that runs the hovercraft, during a special tournament held at Brean last week.

“It was a lot of fun and we were delighted that such a super amount was raised,” said Bob Masterman, Brean Golf Club Men’s Captain.

Players and spectators were also able to take a look inside the hovercraft during the day as crewmembers had taken the craft out to Brean and parked it near the first tee.

Alan Miller, BARB chairman, thanked the organisers and added: “We’re incredibly grateful to Brean Golf Club and everyone who took part. It was a very successful day, and to raise such a large amount for the hovercraft is simply superb.”

Club captains Bob Masterman and Deirdre Wheadon with BARB's Alan Miller and Mel GoslingBrean Golf Club has pledged to raise money for BARB throughout the year, having decided to choose the hovercraft as its main charity for fundraising. All money raised will go towards the high costs of purchasing and maintaining equipment and funding the crew’s ongoing training.

Last Friday’s event was won by Price’s Pedroes, a team comprising of Rob Price, P Edwards, G Clark and T Smith, who completed the course in nine under par.

They were presented with the BARB Charity Trophy, a special award made just for this event and donated by Steve Elton of Bespoke Signs in Highbridge.

Bob Masterman praised the winners, saying: “Despite strong winds and challenging playing conditions, they did well to complete their round with a strong score – it was such a blustery day that the ball was going in all directions!”
