Dozens of volunteers joined a big beach clean in Brean today (Saturday, September 18th) as part of a nationwide event.
The Beachwatch Weekend event next to Brean Down was held by the Somerset Biodiversity Partnership and the Marine Conservation Society to monitor levels of litter in the sea and on the beach.
People of all ages and levels of fitness tramped across the beaches, peering into rock pools and fishing out plastic, food wrappers, rope and bottle caps from the strandline.
At Brean Down, employees from Ofwat also carried out a survey. Sedgemoor District Council provided gloves and litter pickers and the council also collected the rubbish.
Treasure hunts for rock pool inhabitants also took place, with experts on seaweeds on hand. Guided coastal walks were provided for free by the National Trust at Brean Down.
The Somerset Biodiversity Partnership was one of the organisations helping to organise the events.
