Over 30 volunteers joined a beach clean in Brean on Saturday morning (March 24th) when 20 sackfuls of rubbish were collected after being found washed up along the tideline.
The helpers, who included holidaymakers, seasonal owners and local residents, joined staff from local holiday park Holiday Resort Unity in collecting the rubbish, plus a few odd items including a hosepipe and a plastic barrel.
The event was held to support Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean and also the ongoing campaign by Litter Free Coast & Sea Somerset.
Despite a chilly wind, the weather stayed dry and an area of 500 yards was cleaned from the access road into Berrow Beach towards Brean Down.
Debbie Matthews, a member of the marketing team, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We would like to thank everyone who came down to join us for the beach clean. As well as people staying with us, people came from as far as Bristol and Wellington to help out for the morning, which was fantastic.”
“I think everyone was surprised at the amount of litter there actually was on the beach – the more you look, the more you see. It was also great to hear at the end that people are really keen for us to do this again.”
And Alan House, Director at Holiday Resort Unity, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This was the start of several schemes we will be implementing this year with the support of Tanya Cox, the Coastal Officer for Somerset, to further protect our coast and environment.”
“One of these is a ‘Two Minute Beach Clean’ A-Board, which will be placed outside the main reception from May, with an outer holder for litter pickers and an integrated holder for carrier bags.”
“Users take a litter picker and a bag, fill it up with litter for 2 minutes or more and dispose of the litter in nearby bins or our recycling points.”
The holiday park has won several awards and accolades for its environmental and sustainable polices and procedures.
