Highbridge’s King Alfred Amateur Boxing Club has been given a funding boost this week from a local couple.
Peter and Helen Penfold from Weston’s Penfold Plastics has presented £1,000 to the club, which is based at Burnham Waste in the town.
Roger Cross, Club Chairman, pictured with the couple, said: “This is a massive boost for our club that will enable us to buy new and upgraded equipment.”
“Very many thanks go to Peter and Helen – we have bought ten sets of boxing gloves, ten sets of bag gloves, 10 ropes, hand wraps, plus two speed balls and brackets.”
“This upgrade will mean that the Club can keep the subscriptions low and all youth participants will benefit.”
Peter added: “It’s a really great ‘grass roots’ boxing club that does a fantastic job in helping young people get fit and build confidence. Our daughter loves it here – they deserve as much support as possible.”
Juniors pay £1.50 per session, while seniors pay £2.00 per session. Training nights are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 6.30pm to 8pm. There’s also a Ladies Box-fit night on Wednesdays at from 7.15pm to 8.30pm. Coaches are trained and certificated by Amateur Boxing England and all boxers must undergo a medical.
