An up-and-coming Highbridge boxer has been selected to fight for the Western Counties team.

Shaunessy Abraham, right, trains at Highbridge’s King Alfred Amateur Boxing Club and is delighted to have been picked to represent the region at a competition on October 3rd in Guernsey.

“Shaunessy has been training all summer for the fight, up to four nights each week, and really is showing lots of promise,” said the club’s Roger Cross.

He added that news of the selection is great for the boxer and the club itself.

Training nights are held at the club on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm-8pm and are open to newcomers. Call 01278 284753 for more details.

The club has also unveiled a new poster promotion campaign to encourage more youngsters into boxing. Roger explained: “We have launched a recruitment drive because we are concerned about all the new homes going up in the area, bringing more youths into the area. We want to get them off the streets and into sport.”

Meanwhile, the club also thanked a supporter for a generous donation. Peter Penfold has given funding to allow the purchase of three new bags and they are now looking to get new gloves.
