Police seal off Berrow beach after discovery of ‘wartime bomb’

-

The discovery of a suspected unexploded wartime bomb in Berrow dunes led police to seal off part of the village’s beach on Friday evening (September 26th).

These were the scenes as officers restricted access to a large area of sand at the top of the beach near Berrow’s Unity Farm caravan park.

The incident began after a holidaymaker found what appeared to be the rusty shell of a wartime bomb shell late in the afternoon.

Walkers in the area were being diverted away from the scene on Friday evening by beach wardens and police from Burnham-On-Sea, as pictured.

“The device is several hundred yards up in the soft sand, well away from the beach so it can’t have been washed up by the sea,” nearby holidaymaker Greg Martin told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “It’s about 30 centimetres long and looks like a very rusty bomb shell.”

Burnham-On-Sea.com understands a bomb disposal team is due to investigate the device further on Saturday.
