Warning issued over bogus charity collectors in Burnham-On-Sea

-

Residents in Burnham-On-Sea have this week been warned to look out for bogus charity collectors carrying out door-to-door visits on behalf of a fire fighters charity.

Several illegal charity collectors were reported to Burnham police on Wednesday (May 19th) after being challenged while collecting collecting envelopes in Berrow Road on behalf of The Fire Fighters Charity.

Concerned Burnham-On-Sea Fire Station Officer Ian Hazelton told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “One of our crew became suspicious of what they were doing and when he asked to see their charity collectors’ licence, a photocopied piece of paper was produced.”

“We’ve had the licence number checked out and found it was actually only valid for collections in Bristol, not Somerset, so the collections here were illegal and it is unclear where the money will go to.”

Mr Hazelton added: “We’ve reported the incident to Burnham police and would urge people who want to support the Fire Fighters Charity – which is genuine and very well-respected charity – to visit us at Burnham Fire Station in Marine Drive any Wednesday evening from 7pm and hand their donations directly to us.”

“It is a concern that this has been happening in Burnham and we hope residents will be wary about door-to-door collections.”
