Body washed up on Burnham-On-Sea beach was a woman, say police

-

A post mortem has concluded that a body washed up on Burnham-On-Sea beach last Saturday was a woman.

Police said on Tuesday (December 11th) that an investigation to formally identify her is ongoing and that they are “keeping an open mind” on the cause of the death.

A beach walker made the grim discovery next to the jetty at around 10am last Saturday, prompting police to seal off the area, as pictured, before they removed a body bag.

Police spokeswoman Cath Foster told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A post mortem has concluded that the body was that of a woman but her identity is not yet known. She had been in the water for some time and it is not yet clear who she was or her age.”

She added that police are “keeping an open mind” on the cause of the death until the investigation is further developed.

Officers have been checking missing people records in order to try and make a positive identification of the lady.
